SALT LAKE CITY – A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stealing a Salt Lake City police officer’s car and taking it for an unauthorized ride.

While the police were investigating another incident early in the morning, 38-year-old Joseph Schmeichel went to the marked patrol car and got in. Once in the vehicle that was a K-9 patrol car with the K-9 still behind, Schmeichel drove off.
After circling the block, Schmeichel was arrested. While in detention, Schmeichel told officers that he knew he was not allowed to take the car.

Schmeichel was arrested and booked for stealing and disturbing a police animal or police officer.
