HUNTSVILLE — A man was critically injured after Utah troopers say a possible mechanical issue may have caused his dump truck to crash down an about 50-foot ravine Friday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash near the intersection of Trappers Loop Road and state Route 39 shortly after 2 pm, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Irvine.
Irvine said the man, whose name and age were not released, was driving a dump truck north on Trappers Loop Road when the truck crossed SR 39 into a field and then down a steep ravine about 150 feet from the roadway. The man was not wearing a seat belt and was out of the vehicle when emergency responders arrived on scene, he added.
The driver was flown by medical helicopter to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden with critical injuries. Weber Fire District officials said the injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation but a handful of witnesses who reported the crash, also told investigators that it appeared that the dump truck’s brakes were smoking as it left the roadway, Irvine said.
“There’s an indication that possibly there was a mechanical failure,” he said.
Deputies with both the Weber and Morgan sheriff’s offices also responded to the crash, as did firefighters with the Weber Fire District. Officials with the department said that firefighters knocked out a small brush fire caused by the crash.
The crash originally led to some lane closures, but all lanes are open in the area again.
