OGDEN, Utah, March 14, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) – A man was charged with alleged assaulting two employees in an Ogden warehouse.

A victim could lose the use of her left hand due to her injuries, doctors told Ogden Police officers.

Kay Karnes, 22, is being held in Weber County Jail. He was charged on suspicion:

  • Murder, a first degree crime (likely changed since the victim did not die)
  • Heightened attack resulting in grievous bodily harm, a second degree crime

A probable cause statement filed by an Ogden Police Department officer stated that police arrived at the camp at around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, March 12.

“When I got there, I watched one of the victims sit on a table with two other women and help hold a paper towel by the hand. I could clearly see that the victim was bleeding profusely from her hand and there was blood on the floor she was sitting on. “

Witnesses told the officer that two employees got into an argument while they were working.

“The detainee, Kay, had a verbal argument with victim 1,” said a possible reason statement submitted by an Ogden Police Department officer.

“The argument got heated when they spoke verbally. At one point, Kay grabbed a steak-style kitchen knife with a black handle and serrated teeth. Kay then returned to the center of the camp, where he started the argument with the victim again.

“Kay grabbed victim 1 on the ground, where he tried several times to stab him with the knife. When Kay tried to stab the victim three times in the neck, my second victim became involved and intervened. She stated that she clearly feared for the life of victim 1 and thought Kay would kill him.

“Victim 2 grabbed Kay’s hand, who was brandishing the knife to keep him from stabbing victim 1. After grabbing Kay’s hand, Kay forcibly withdrew his hand and cut victim 2’s left center, ring and little finger from.”

Kay then hid the knife under his other belongings and fled the warehouse with another involved party, the statement said.

“Victim 2 was seen by medical staff on site and advised to go to the emergency room immediately,” said the probable cause statement. “At the hospital, the victim was found to have 2 deep cuts on her fingers that cut ligaments in her hand and required 17 stitches. The doctor in the emergency room explained that victim 2 would need to be seen by a hand specialist and could possibly permanently lose full function in her left hand. “

When the officers spoke to Victim 1, “He stated that he feared for his life and was deeply grateful for Victim 2 because, without her intervention, he believed that he would have been killed in the incident.

“Victim 2 told the hospital officials that she needed to intervene because she believed Kay intended to kill Victim 1 and would have succeeded if she hadn’t intervened.”

Karnes was later located by Clearfield police after the Ogden officer requested an address check.

“Upon arriving in Clearfield, it was evident that Kay did not speak English, but his cousin stayed on site to translate,” the Ogden official said in the submitted statement.

“As a result of the translation, Kay’s rights were read to him via Miranda and he orally renounced his rights. During the interview, Kay stated that he grabbed the knife on purpose, but stated that he only grabbed it to scare victim 1 about the fight breaking out. Kay refused to attempt to stab victim 1 but confirmed that he had withdrawn his hand when victim 2 grabbed him. “

Karnes’ account of the incident was different from the multiple witnesses to the incident, who “all said he tried multiple times to stab victim 1,” the probable cause said the statement.

Karnes is being held without bail.
