Obituary for Byron Kimball Montgomery

Byron Montgomery

1937 – 2022

Byron Kimball Montgomery passed away on December 28, 2022. He was born in Ogden, Utah, on January 25, 1937 to Joseph Kimball Montgomery and Thelma Hall. He was the 5th of 6 children.

He grew up in North Ogden, Utah, where he loved farming with his dad. He started riding horses at 4 years old, and his love for horses lasted throughout his life.

He began playing the trumpet at age 9. By the time he was in high school he played in bands, dances, funerals, and churches of any denomination.

Byron was ever a proud Tiger, graduating from Ogden High School in 1955. He then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the West Central States mission.

Byron attended USU on a music scholarship. He was the first chair trumpet in the USU band. In addition, he wrestled for Utah State with his brother, Dick. Byron was a member of the SAE fraternity.

He earned his BS (1962) and MS (1965) in Agriculture Economics.

During college, Byron worked at the Kappa Delta sorority house serving meals. It was there that he met the KD president, Catherine Brown, the love of his life. They were married in March of 1962 in the Mesa, AZ temple.

After college, Byron began his career as an agricultural attaché for the US Department of Agriculture. Throughout his government career, he traveled to over 40 countries. Byron & Catherine lived abroad for many years in Central America, South America, and Europe.

Byron was active in the LDS Church and was able to help organize the first branch in Venezuela while they lived there. He served in many bishoprics, mission presidencies, and young men’s callings in particular.

During their retirement, Byron and Catherine served in the Ogden Temple for English and Spanish sessions. They also served for many years as ushers for the LDS Conference Center. Additionally, they went on three service missions to Palmyra, New York as well as a full-time mission in the Guatemala City Temple.

We will miss Byron’s sense of humor, the pony rides, listening to him play his trumpet, watching him bungee jump, cliff jump, zip-line, and ride motorcycles, long after he should have. He was always up for an adventure, and he made life fun.

Byron & Catherine were blessed with 10 children. Gordon (Tammy), Melissa (Jim) McAllister, Beth (Doug) Gosney, Jeff (Dawna), Scott (Kim), Jennie (Daren) Turner, Melanie (Steve) Brenchley, David (Tracy), Robin (Evan) Jamison, and Mark (Michelle). They have 33 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

Byron was preceded in death by his son, Mark, his parents, and siblings: Vern Montgomery, Patty (Dale) Vining, & Ruth (Roger) Bown. He is survived by his siblings Thelma (Richard, dec.) Shinney, & Dick (Chris) Montgomery.
