DEER CREEK STATE PARK, Utah, July 4, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) – Utah State Parks officials released the name of a man who died from drowning in Deer Creek State Park on Saturday.

The victim was Randall Fern, 69, of Salt Lake City.

“On July 3, just after noon, Utah State Park rangers and members of the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office responded to the boat ramp after receiving reports of a possible drowning,” Utah state officials said in a statement Parks.

“The man, Randall Fern, 69, had been canoeing with four other family members when their boats flooded. The group could not straighten their canoes and decided to swim to the bank.

“About fifteen feet from shore, Fern began to stay afloat and was in distress. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket. “

A passing boater was able to bring Fern into the boat and take him to the boat ramp, “where first responders waited and worked to resuscitate him,” the statement said.

“Despite all efforts, Fern was pronounced dead at the scene. The other family members in the group are unharmed, ”the state park statement said.

The incident is being investigated.

“Utah State Parks extends our condolences to Fern’s friends and family.

We would also like to remind those who venture outdoors to always be on their guard and put safety first. Always remember to wear a well-fitting, US Coast Guard approved life jacket. Renew yourself within the scope of your abilities and be a good example for other relaxation seekers and children in your area. “
