All five victims of the shooting were alumni of schools in the SLC school district, according to an email Superintendent Larry Madden sent to the parents. Two of the injured were West High School graduates in 2021, one is a previous Highland High School graduate, and Amone and one of the injured victims were former West High School graduates.

“We were deeply saddened by this devastating news,” wrote Madden. “We know that many of you are affected by this tragedy and wanted to offer our support as the district and school administration.”

The district offers advice at its schools from Monday to Thursday.

The full email from Madden, including resources for anyone in crisis or needing assistance, is available below.

Police say some witnesses are not cooperative, but they are looking for an older model white sedan that may have been involved in the shooting.

The authorities are asking the public to call 801-799-3000 and refer case 21-96966 if they have information.

Dear families,

This morning we received word of a shooting at a graduation ceremony early on Sunday morning, in which four people were injured and one dead. All five victims are members of our community and were either recent or past Salt Lake City School District graduates.

We were deeply saddened by this devastating news. We know that many of you are affected by this tragedy and wanted to offer our support as the district and school administration. Two of the victims are West High School 2021 graduates, one is a former Highland High School graduate, and the other two young people, including the person who was fatally shot, are both former West High School graduates. We know their families are valued members of the neighborhood, and many of them have siblings, family members, and friends who attend our schools.

As parents and legal guardians, we ask you to keep an eye on your student in the coming days and weeks. This is a critical time, especially given the school is renting out for the summer. Our school counseling teams will be available tomorrow, Monday, June 7th, at all district schools for all students who need support. Consultants will also be available through Thursday June 10th. If your student needs additional assistance, please email your school principal directly.

As we communicated with law enforcement agencies today, we have been assured that the police are doing everything in their power to find the perpetrators and seek justice. In situations like this, especially when the victims are innocent bystanders, it can be tempting for our young people to try to take matters into their own hands. Please speak to your students and encourage them to deal with any emotions they may be feeling by speaking with a counselor or other trusted source.

As we head into the summer vacation, please use the list of resources below if you feel that your student or one of their friends is in a crisis or needs additional assistance.
