Pleasant View is working on a proposal to honor the City News’ military veterans

PLEASANT VIEW – Pleasant View City is working on a plan to ensure that all military veterans there – past, present, and future – are officially honored.

Pleasant View city manager Amy Mabey said the city is developing a proposal to erect a large memorial bearing the names of all the city service members. The memorial would be on the south side of Pleasant View Town Hall at 520 W. Elberta Dr. and include names of former and current members of the military and space for the names of future military veterans.

When Pleasant View passed its fiscal 2021 budget, $ 25,000 was allocated to the project. Mabey said the project had been discussed for several years, and previous fundraisers by City Councilor Kevin Bailey and his wife Christine raised about $ 5,000 to be used on the effort.

A subcommittee made up of Mabey, Bailey, and Mayor Leonard Call recently considered several proposals for the project and landed on a concrete and granite design to be built by Pleasant View-based Stone Supply and Monument. According to the city council, the monument will be made of high quality black granite and will clearly represent each branch of the military as well as the city dwellers associated with each branch.

The total cost of the project is $ 42,150, exceeding the city’s current funding cache by $ 12,150. The proposal also does not include the cost of any additional concrete needed, lighting, and the installation of a bell tower previously donated to the city from the old Ogden LDS Temple site.

Pleasant View City Council will review Stone Supply’s offer during its session on Tuesday.

Bailey, who said his wife was the driving force behind the project, says local fundraisers will continue until the project is completed and the city will seek donations for materials and labor. The project was inspired in part by his father-in-law, Gilbert Taylor, who was a veteran in the Navy, says Bailey.

“We really considered it kind of a pipe dream for a while,” said Bailey. “But it’s exciting to see how it comes together and brings this thing closer to reality.”

North Ogden-based Follow the Flag and James Hammon are working with the city to move the project forward, Bailey said.

Mabey said the city hopes to dedicate the memorial by November 11th this year’s Veterans Day.

Until then, the city is trying to put together names of local veterans.

“That is the main thing the public should know now.” Said Mabey. “Pending approval by the council (of the offer), we will search for the names of people who are, or have been, residents of Pleasant View for inclusion on the memorial.”
