Preparation Notebook: Morgan, St. Joseph Football Get No. 1 Seed, Ogden Schools Learn Fate; Wednesday scores | Secondary school

Some Weber and Morgan County’s boys’ football teams found their seeds in the state’s upcoming playoffs on Wednesday with the release of the RPI and state tournament brackets.

Following title winning seasons in the region, both St. Joseph and Morgan High have reached # 1 in 2A and 3A tournaments.

Ogden is seed # 9 in 4A, with Ben Lomond at number 13 and Bear River at number 21.

Although Ogden (8-3) has a “better” seed than Ben Lomond, Ogden will be on his way for his first playoff game and Ben Lomond will be at home.

The 4A bracket consists of 21 schools, meaning that seeds # 12-16 get home games in the first round and seeds # 9-11 have street games in the second round.

The Tigers said goodbye in the first round and placed them in the second round against Stansbury # 8 on Wednesday 5 May, a rematch against Stansbury 5-0 in late March.

Stansbury’s team had a severe COVID-19 outbreak that canceled the stallions’ last two regular season games against Ben Lomond (April 21) and Ogden (April 27).

The outbreak initially cast doubt on Stansbury’s ability to continue their season, but Ogden’s sporting director Scott Yetter said he learned from SHS that his team would be cleared for return later this week, in time for next Wednesday’s playoff game.

Ben Lomond (5-7) will host the winless Tooele in the first round, while the winner will play in Snow Canyon No. 4 in the second round.

In 2A, the undefeated Region 17 champ St. Joseph took the number 1 spot after being number 2 behind Beaver High in the RPI for weeks.

The Jayhawks (11-0) say goodbye and will host the winner of a first round match between American Heritage and Freedom Prep on Wednesday, May 5th at 4pm.

Layton Christian (7-7) is number 8 in 2A and receives Millard No. 9 on the same day in the second round.

Should St. Joseph and LCA both win their matchups in the second round, they would face each other in the quarterfinals, a rematch of the Jayhawks 2-1 win of the season a few weeks ago.

St. Joseph has just completed a dominant regular season, beating the teams 56-6 and 48-6 in regional games. As soon as the LCA was added to its schedule for the region, it dominated seven games in the region by a margin of 46-11.

In 3A, Region 13 champion Morgan (13-2) is number 1 and the Trojans will host the Union or the American leadership on Wednesday May 5th at 4pm.

As the Trojans’ potential developed, they could see regional opponents South Summit (MHS won both regular season meetings with a combined 7-0), the Grand or regional opponent Grantsville in the semi-finals and one of the Delta, Manti or Judge, in the quarterfinals Memorial in the final, Morgan should get this far.

In the regular season Morgan was also dominant and prevailed 76: 9 and 49: 4 in regional games against the teams.

Both the 3A and 2A semi-finals will take place in Juan Diego on Monday 17th May. The final will take place on May 18th at the Rio Tinto Stadium.

This story will be updated with scores and stats from Wednesday’s list of high school games from Northern Utah.
