Provo’s redesigned Timpanogos Golf Course, formerly East Bay Golf Course, was the setting for the city’s first Provo Advantage Economic Summit.

More than 150 business developers were on hand to golf their way through the economic benefits of Provo. Each of the golf course’s 18 holes featured a host who highlighted the “Provo advantage”.

“Building the best future for Provo requires a competitive and collaborative approach,” said Mayor Michelle Kaufusi. “Our Economic Summit represents both as we take 18 holes to share what Provo is all about with those who will help us realize our community vision.”

The Provo Advantage Economic Summit began with the surprise arrival of the Kaufusi helicopter. The helicopter then remained “parked” on Hole 15 to present Provo Airport, which is now the second largest in the state, as one of Provo’s most important economic engines.

“The new terminal at Provo City Airport should ‘open the floodgates of awe,'” said Kaufusi. “Even before its completion, it has been proving meaningful returns for taxpayers as six new destinations have been announced, each of which is estimated to generate an estimated $ 15 million a year for our local economy.”

Other hole sponsors highlighted Provo’s advantage with quality educational facilities, an innovative start-up culture, strong corporate partners and active local business agencies.

“Working together is important in the community building business – and that’s what we do in Provo,” said Kaufusi. “We are grateful to be supported and surrounded by so many who share our community vision and see the untapped potential of Provo.”

Business development is one of the four pillars of the city of Kaufusi, and the benefits of Provo’s economic opportunities will be presented in the coming year.

By attracting new businesses and showcasing what already exists, Kaufusi and her team promoted the national recognition that Provo continues to receive.

Provo received the following awards nationwide in 2020/21: No. 1 Top Performing City (Milken Institute); # 1 Safest City (MoneyGeek); No. 1 youngest city (porch.com); No. 1 Charitable City (Smart Assist); and No. 3 Best Run City (Wallet Hub).

Kaufusi also noted several areas of the community that bring notoriety and business to the city, including:

  • Positioning Provo as the center of education, medicine, government, hospitality, and transportation for all of Utah County – the fastest growing county in the nation’s fastest growing state.
  • Provos unique, livable downtown with over 70 downtown restaurants, a four-star hotel and two convention centers. Over 1,000 multi-family residential units have been built in the last three years or are in planning or under construction.
  • Provo’s constant link to technology as the innovation hub for the region – from the beginnings of WordPerfect and Novell to the many spin-offs of these companies and dozens of startups – is provided by a constant flow of BYU and UVU employees to Provo at the forefront of innovation.

Kaufusi said the momentum continues to build as others see the benefits of Provo. These include 250,000 square feet of Class A retail space under construction, several high-end apartment building projects under construction, an expansion of Provo Airport, a new 100,000 square foot City Hall opening in 2022, and redevelopment of the old City Hall site slated to begin shortly.
