Salt Lake City high schools will start an hour later this fall

Students in the Salt Lake City School District will start school at 8:45 am this fall. They will also end later at 3pm

The district’s school board made the decision in a vote Tuesday after looking at the issue for more than a year.

The district previously discussed the possible changes and received input from parents during the winter of 2019-20 when it held several listening sessions to get community feedback on the idea.

Former school teacher Carol Spackman Moss previously told 2News she supported the change on the grounds that getting more sleep was better for students’ health and concentration. She said sleep science was well studied; The aim is to improve performance and “Depression decrease, absenteeism and delays decrease, accidents decrease.”

Critics of the proposal were concerned about how this might affect start times for middle and elementary school students. The board has yet to decide on changes for younger classes.
