Salt Lake City prepares for possible demonstrations as Chauvin trial winds down

As the country prepares to complete the Derek Chauvin Trial in Minneapolis, Salt Lake City urges residents and businesses to prepare for demonstrations and “possible disruptions to normal activities.”

The jury will soon deliberate on the trial of the former Minneapolis police officer who is accused of murdering George Floyd last May.

In a series of tweets late Friday from the Salt Lake City Economic Development Report, the city admitted it had been a “busy couple of weeks in our country,” and called for vigilance.

“We learned a lot over the past year and out of caution, please know that public security officials will remain vigilant to protect our community,” the tweet read.

In the tweets, city officials urged people to use SLC’s mobile app to review reports of vandalism and graffiti, follow @slcpd on Twitter for updates, and call 911 in an emergency.

Almost a year ago, Salt Lake City experienced riot and violence from protests in response to Floyd’s death, including the burning of a police car and the vandalism of some downtown businesses.

The streets of the city were rioted again in July after police found the shooting of 22-year-old Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal in Salt Lake to be justified.

It was an emotional time in the past few weeks as Chauvin’s trial took place in Minneapolis. Final arguments are expected on Monday, followed by the jury considering and then delivering a verdict.
