Suspect charged with murder in Vernal shootout

VERNAL, Utah – A 31-year-old man was charged with murder in connection with a June 3 shooting in Vernal.

Christopher Travis Herrera was identified as a suspect in the shooting and has been in Uintah County Jail since his arrest following a police standoff following the shooting.

According to the Facebook post announcing the charges, no further details are being released at this time in the interests of preserving the integrity of the case and the testimony of witnesses.

Last Wednesday, police were dispatched to Vernal at 250 West and 400 North, and officers found an adult man who was shot multiple times.

The officers identified a suspect and attempted a traffic control, but the suspect fled to a nearby apartment building.

The police tried to negotiate with the suspect for two hours.

He left the house and a police K9 was released and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect received medical attention on the spot and was taken to a local hospital for treatment for bite wounds.

The investigation continues while additional witnesses are located and evidence is processed and evaluated.

The Vernal Police Department has made it clear that the murder is unrelated to a reported shot at Uintah High School on the same day.
