Antonio Garcia, who was 15 years old when he shot Satnam Singh to death in his shop on February 28, agreed to plead guilty to the reduced aggravated gun discharge charge, rather than the original aggravated murder charge. In addition, Garcia pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, also a first-degree crime.

With the plea deal, the now 16-year-old Garcia faces a maximum sentence of five years to life imprisonment. He is placed in a youth facility until he is 21 years old. At that point, officials will decide whether Garcia will be paroled or transferred to state prison.

Garcia was arrested days after the murder of 65-year-old Singh at his super grocery store on 675 North Monroe Boulevard.

Police say Garcia approached Singh at the counter, drew a gun and said, “That’s a stick.” Garcia shot Singh four times and hit him twice before escaping the store on foot.

After his arrest, Garcia informed authorities that he had entered the shop to commit a robbery because “according to court records, he did not have as much cash as he wanted”. He also admitted smoking THC the day before the shooting, but quit “to sober up for the robbery”.

After his death, vigils were held to commemorate Singh, who was very popular in the community
