The names of the fallen Ogden officer and the UHP soldier have been added to the Capitol Memorial

The names of two fallen police officers are now written in bronze on a memorial in the Utah State Capitol.

People gathered Thursday to pay their respects to officer Nathan Lyday and Utah Highway Patrol soldier Franklin Schaerrer.

Lyday was murdered a year ago this month while responding to a call for help on domestic violence.

Shaerrer died in 1945 of complications after attempting to live on a vehicle that was involved in a traffic accident.

“Law enforcement threatens your wellbeing every day to preserve our freedom today,” said Eric Young, Ogden City Police Chief. “Franklin Shaerrer and Nate Lyday are examples of the commitment that each of these fine officers has here with us today.”

The memorial to fallen officers in the Capitol takes its name from 1853, when Sheriff’s Deputy Rodney Badger drowned while attempting to rescue it.
