The University Of Utah: Creating More Inclusive Systems

June 25, 2021

“These are two important changes as we work to create more inclusive systems in the underground,” said Clare Lemke, director of the LGBT Resource Center. “It is now easier for individuals to use their chosen name in more university systems and communications. We hope that many students will update their CIS page with gender and sexual identity data so we can better serve everyone.”

Information on gender and sexual identity identity

Lemke said that by giving students the ability to share information about their identities, the university will better understand how to recruit, retain, and graduate students with different identities. The goal is to use this data to improve resources, programs, and policies that support a diverse campus.

Chosen / Preferred Name

Until now, U employees and students had the opportunity to update their chosen / preferred first name in HR systems and CIS. Now selected / preferred names are automatically updated in several systems on campus, so that students and employees no longer have to ask individual departments to overwrite their legal first names in HR systems or in the campus directory.

“When we celebrate Pride Month, it is important that we as an institution make university-wide system changes that include the LGBTQIA + who live, work and learn here more. Our institution is easier to navigate and we ensure that we know who “Students are important,” said Lemke. “At the same time, we know that much remains to be done and we are determined to continue making significant structural changes with real impact.”
