OGDEN — Prosecutors have filed a third criminal case against a 47-year-old Layton man suspected of sexually abusing children, some of the alleged incidents occurring decades ago.

Russell Dean Johnson was charged on Tuesday by the Weber County Attorney’s Office with first-degree felony rape of a child and second-degree felony sexual abuse of a child.

“As one case is investigated, another is discovered,” an Ogden Police Department detective said in a probable cause statement on the latest case. A 19-year-old woman recently disclosed that Johnson allegedly groped and raped her repeatedly over several years beginning when she was 5 years old.

In mid-September, Johnson was arrested and charged in the alleged sexual abuse of a 9-year-old girl during the Fourth of July weekend and a second female child in 2006-2015. The latter alleged victim, now an adult, confronted Johnson in text and social media messages, calling him a pedophile, resulting in him apologizing, according to charging documents.

Police said Monday there are five open cases, with more under investigation. Four of the alleged victims are now adults.

Johnson is held without bail at the Weber County Jail. Police said they had minimal discussion with Johnson about the first case before he invoked his right to remain silent and asked for an attorney. Efforts to contact Johnson’s listed court-appointed attorney, Randy Kennard, were not immediately successful.
