OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) – Police say a man allegedly stabs both of his coworkers and runs away after a heated argument.
On March 12, Ogden officials said they were sent to an area around 1:30 a.m. to receive reports of assault. Upon arrival, a woman was discovered with a cut on her hand. “I watched one of the victims sit on a table with two other women and help hold a paper towel by the hand. I could clearly see that the victim was bleeding profusely from her hand and there was blood on the floor she was sitting on, ”said a statement on the likely cause.

Following the discovery, officials said they then began their investigation with “multiple” witnesses.
The suspect, 23-year-old Kay Karnes, got into an argument with his male colleague for the first time, according to arrest documents. Police say their argument got heated when they spoke verbally.
“At one point, Kay grabbed a steak-style kitchen knife with a black handle and serrated teeth. Kay then returned to the center of the camp, where he started the argument with the victim again, ”say Ogden police officers.
Officials say when Karnes followed his colleague to the center of the camp, he grabbed her on the ground and tried several times to stab him with the knife.

When Karnes tried to “stab the victim three times in the neck,” his other collaborator became involved and intervened. The officers said, “She stated that she clearly feared for the life of victim 1 and thought Kay would kill him.”
The Ogden Police Department then claims that the agent grabbed Karnes’ hand, who brandished the knife to stop him from stabbing the first employee. “After grabbing Kay’s hand, Kay forcibly withdrew his hand and cut off the middle left, ring and little finger of victim 2.”
Officials then found that Karnes “was hiding the knife under other items in the warehouse at the time when he fled the scene with another involved party”.
According to Ogden PD, the worker was then seen by local medical staff and advised to go to the emergency room immediately. “At the hospital, the victim was found to have 2 deep cuts on her fingers that cut ligaments in her hand and required 17 stitches,” officials said. “The doctor in the emergency room explained that victim 2 would need to be seen by a hand specialist and could possibly permanently lose full function in her left hand.”
After helping two victims involved, Ogden officials said they had started looking for the missing suspect.
“I tried to find Kay at an address that he could possibly be linked to. Kay was eventually located by Clearfield Police in Clearfield after I asked them to help verify an address, ”said an Ogden officer. “Upon arriving in Clearfield, it was evident that Kay did not speak English, but his cousin stayed on site to translate.”
After documents were arrested, Karnes’ rights were read to him by translation via Miranda, which he orally renounced.

“During the interview, Kay stated that he grabbed the knife on purpose but stated that he only grabbed it to scare victim 1 about the fight breaking out,” officials say. “Kay refused to attempt to stab victim 1 but confirmed that he had withdrawn his hand when victim 2 grabbed him.”
According to Ogden officials, Karnes’ account of the incident was “unlike the multiple witnesses to the incident, all of whom said he tried several times to stab victim 1”.

Kay Karnes was then “arrested and sent to Weber County Jail,” according to a probable cause.
Karnes was charged with the following charges after records were arrested: attempted murder and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily harm.
