SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – One of the two sheriff MPs wounded in a shooting outside the Salt Lake City prison lost his eye, but the other was discharged from the hospital, officials said Sunday. The suspect died.

Deputy Leland Grossett underwent eye surgery on Saturday and was in stable condition in hospital on Sunday, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

The other MP, Joshua Buerke, was shot in the cheek and discharged from hospital on Saturday, the bureau said.

A man identified as Joshua Michael Johnson, 31, carried a gun and opened fire on the two MPs as they approached him outside the prison around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sheriff Rosie Rivera said. Johnson was killed, but Rivera said Saturday she did not know if one or both MPs returned fire or how many shots were fired.

Grossett and Buerke are partners and worked as part of the security for the property, she said. At the time, she said the suspect was unknown to the department and appeared to be temporary.

“I would like to thank the public for their support and good wishes for our MPs,” said Rivera in a press release on Sunday.
