LH “Chuck” Wullstein

dr Chuck Wullstein, 90 years old, died on Monday, July 25th.

Salt Lake City, Utah—Chuck was born in Nampa, Idaho on November 23, 1931. After attending East High School in SLC, he majored in botany at the University of Utah. Graduate studies followed in microbiology and edaphology at Oregon State University. After completing his doctorate, Chuck held professorships at the University of British Columbia, and for 37 years at the University of Utah. He was a United Nations appointee to an international conference on pesticides, sponsored by Cambridge University in 1965; a recipient of a one -year Senior Research Fulbright Fellowship, in Ireland from 1972 to 1973; and a corecipient of the Outstanding Research Award bestowed by Ecological Society of America in 1986. Throughout his career, his research interests focused on nitrogen cycling and biogeography. Chuck also taught generations of students biology and related curriculum at the University of Utah, and was recognized multiple times for his outstanding undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Chuck’s scientific interests reflected his enduring love of nature and the outdoors. An avid fly fisherman and hiker, he relished exploring remote regions of the West, often in the company of students, colleagues, friends, or family. He read prolifically, and spent hours in his study listening to classical music.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Betty (Mills) Wullstein, his daughters Kathryn Lee Wullstein (Stephen Perkins) of Edmond, OK; and Kristen Marie Wullstein (John Westien) of San Francisco, CA.; his sister, Molly (Wullstein) Van Austen, along with his niece, Hillary Van Austen (Mike Nolan); his nephew, Carl Van Austen (Patty), and their children, Olivia and Lola Van Austen.
