Louis Girardo Obituary (1929-2021) – Salt Lake City, UT

Louis Willard Girardo

1929 ~ 2021

Our beloved father, grandfather and grandfather Lou died on Wednesday September 22nd along with his wife Norma at the fishing spot on the other side.

Louie was born in Leadville, Colorado to James and Sarah Girardo. In middle school, his family moved to Ogden, Utah, where he met “the prettiest girl he’d ever seen” bouncing a ball at the top of the stairs of her middle school, Norma. The two were married for 61 happy years and have countless memories of fishing together (especially at Hoop Lake), camping and raising their three children (Lois Eardley, James Girardo and Terri Ongley) and a granddaughter (Michelle Robison).

Although Louie was a man of few words, he cared deeply for his family and friends and would selflessly go out of his way to help them whenever they needed it. Louie had a very rich working life with lots of great experiences. He worked as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years and made many longstanding friendships during his time. He also worked as a guide for Mackinaw fishing in Flaming Gorge, directed wrestling matches, and used his green thumb by providing landscaping at Willow Creek Country Club. He enjoyed everything outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. After his retirement in 1991, he could always be found at a lake with his family and friends.

Norma’s death in 2007 was a very difficult one for Louie and he was looking for family, friends, his dog Marlie, and hobbies to keep him occupied. He enjoyed gardening in his beautifully landscaped yard, taking his dog fishing for Strawberry, and making clocks for loved ones. Louie became a member of a boarding club where he served as a bartender for social events and where he met Beverley Thrall. He was fortunate to find love and companionship with Bev for the final decade of his life. They were both fans of Utah jazz and had season tickets for many years. They also had great fun going to plays and other events. The two had many adventures together, including countless trips to Wendover, where Louie loved to play 21, an Alaska cruise, Macs fishing in the Flaming Gorge, and a few train rides.

We go fishing! We go fishing! A-hi-weeny-weeny and A-hi-poh-poh!
