Olympic Athletes Join Salt Lake City’s Games Committee

The Salt Lake City and Utah Olympics Committee has announced that it will expand its board of directors as it focuses on resuming the Games in 2030 or 2034.

The committee named four-time Olympian Catherine Raney Norman, 40, as its new chair on Wednesday. The committee also named two highly decorated athletes and Park City residents – longtime local Ted Ligety and new addition Lindsey Vonn – as new board members.

During the announcement, Gov Cox said that Raney Norman’s move to the leadership position signaled that returning the Games to Utah in 2030 or 2034 would be a high priority for the state.

“As great as she was as an athlete, she’s an even better person,” said Cox. “And I promise you that this step will attract worldwide attention and that it will undoubtedly make our offering more competitive.”

Raney Norman said the addition of 10 more athletes to the committee’s strategic and governing bodies will strengthen the bodies’ ability to represent both athletes and Utah communities. She added that since joining the community, she’s focused on increasing its diversity.

“We are very proud that we have 42% women on our Athlete Council,” said Raney Norman. “We have 27% Paralympic representation on our council. And we have 57% of athletes who identify with diverse and inclusive backgrounds, and I think that’s just a huge step forward, and you know, adding those 10 athletes to the executive and strategic boards is just going to be our endeavor make it stronger. “

In addition to Raney Norman’s new role, Cox announced that Steve Starks, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Group, will serve as vice chairman and Olympic and Paralympic advisor to the board of governors.

This is Salt Lake City’s sixth application to host the Olympic Games.
