Salt Lake City Mayor Asks City Council To Extend K-12 Mask Mandate

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall sent a letter to the city council on Monday asking for an extension of the city’s masked mandate as coronavirus cases continue to surge across the state.

Mendenhall says school children in the Salt Lake City School District “appear healthier and better able to learn in person than other children in Salt Lake County.” She says the school district has the lowest COVID-19 rates than any of the county’s five school districts.

Mendenhall also says that wearing a mask “doesn’t seem to affect students’ ability to engage or socialize”. She believes the mask mandate is working and needs to be renewed.

The city council will vote on Tuesday evening on whether or not to extend the mandate.
