“This is a robbery,” the boy reportedly said before shooting the death of the Ogden grocer to courts

OGDEN – A 15-year-old boy allegedly fired four shots at Ogden grocer Satnam Singh, who was killed in a robbery last month.

“This is a hold-up,” the teenager said before allegedly firing a pistol at Singh and hitting him twice.

The suspect’s name is not included in this story as the standard examiner does not usually identify juveniles suspected of the crime.

The fee filing, filed on March 3, was obtained from the Utah Courts Administration Office. Juvenile court criminal documents are usually not publicly available, but fee collection documents are available upon written request.

The teenager entered Singh’s store, Super Grocery, 675 N. Monroe Blvd., at 11:51 pm on February 28, grabbed a drink and candy, and approached the counter.

At the counter, the attacker drew a pistol, pointed it at Singh, announced the attack, then shot four times and, according to the documents, ran out of the store.

The investigation was interrupted two days later when Ogden Police were called to an unspecified “youth disorder” in a home. When they arrived, police were told that a 15-year-old boy had found the killer in the grocery store shooting.

Officials said they found a Las Vegas Raiders hoodie, NBA training pants – apparently identical to the clothing seen on the security video in the store – and a weapon that was allegedly used in the shooting.

According to the affidavit, the teenager waived his rights and said he went to the store to rob him.

“He admitted to planning the robbery because he didn’t have as much money as he wanted,” the affidavit said.

He said he fired the gun after Singh stepped away from the counter, the document says.

He also said he bought the gun but would not identify the seller, the affidavit said.

During the interview, the teenager admitted under oath that he smoked THC the day before the robbery “but that he quit smoking so he could sober up for the robbery”.

Geoff Fattah, spokesman for the state court system in Salt Lake City, said Judge Debra Jensen had scheduled a hearing on April 8 to review the suspect’s detention status.

The defendant was charged in an online hearing on Thursday.

Jensen will also hear arguments on a motion by the defense to finalize further hearings on the case on Friday March 19.

Weber District Attorney Christopher Allred said last week his office had not decided whether to apply to the juvenile court for confirmation of the suspect for prosecution in a district court.

Utah law prohibits the death penalty and life imprisonment without parole for juveniles convicted of murder. The maximum sentence is 25 years in prison.

The 65-year-old Singh was born in the Indian state of Punjab and immigrated to the USA in 1987.

He owned and operated the super grocery for 21 years. His death attracted widespread attention as customers, friends, and family praised his contributions to the community.
