2021-08-28

The US has reported more than 37.9 million confirmed COVID-19 cases as of August 26. More than 626,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 – the highest death toll in any country.

There were an average of 45.3 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 Americans nationwide for the week ending August 26th. On a cumulative basis, the U.S. has reported 11,567.6 cases per 100,000 Americans and 190.8 deaths per 100,000 Americans.

In Utah, there were an average of 33.8 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents daily for the week ending August 26. Cumulatively, Utah has reported 14,208.3 cases per 100,000 population, the eighth largest of all 50 states. Utah has reported 80.9 deaths per 100,000, the sixth fewest of all 50 states.

While the country’s largest metropolitan areas were hardest hit in the first few months of the pandemic, almost every city has suffered from the virus. Outbreaks are particularly likely to occur in locations where crowds of people congregate, making cities with high concentrations of colleges, correctional facilities, and nursing homes particularly at risk.

Since the pandemic began, the Provo-Orem metropolitan area has reported 109,176 confirmed cases, or 17,700.6 per 100,000 population – most from any city in Utah.

Salt Lake City, the city with the second highest number of cases per capita, has reported 14,651.8 cases per 100,000 population.

The coronavirus crisis has resulted in widespread unemployment across the country as consumer-facing businesses are forced to close and customers are urged to stay at home. Unemployment in Provo-Orem peaked at 8.1% in April 2020 and is now 2.3% in May 2021.
