SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 16, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) – The Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City announced Monday that construction will begin on a new TRAX station near the intersection of 600 South and Main Streets.

This station, which is part of the long-term plan for the light rail, will “provide access to a rapidly developing part of the city,” with service expected to begin in early 2022, according to a press release from UTA.

“Access to public transportation is essential to nurturing and sustaining equitable communities,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “This new TRAX station will not only support the new activities of the Midtown district triggered by the upcoming developments, but also facilitate the north and south connections for the long-time residents, companies and organizations of the region.”

The public-private collaboration distinguishes this new TRAX station and supports the transit and economic development goals of Salt Lake City and UTA. The Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency brought neighboring developers to the table to meet the station’s funding needs and advance this long-planned project. In addition, the RDA board approved $ 1,428,502 in RDA funding to help build the station.

“Partnership is key to building an infrastructure that truly meets the needs of our community,” said Carlton Christensen, Chair of the UTA Board of Trustees. “We’re excited to expand access to TRAX, and we’re grateful to Salt Lake City and all of the parties who have come together to help us develop and build this new station.”

The station design will include artwork titled “The Crossing” by artist Jiyoun Lee.
