Utah school districts are rushing to fill the replacement teacher positions before 2021-22 begins

OGDEN – The need for substitute teachers across Utah is greater than ever.

With COVID-19 cases soaring, school district officials said they would prepare for possible quarantines among staff when students return for the 2021/22 school year.

Last fall, the need for replacement workers increased as many teachers and staff were quarantined. A national teacher shortage, coupled with the growing population of Utah, also contributes to the shortage of replacement teachers.

The Ogden School District still has 50 replacement teacher positions to fill before teaching resumes at the end of August. Danette Albright has just been hired to fill one of these positions.

“They will probably teach me as much as I will teach them,” she said.

Albright does not have a professional training background and is not required to have one to fill the replacement position. She signed up for elementary school classes and is optimistic that the experience will be positive.

“We’ll see how it goes,” she said. “You know, when I have to get out a calculator, I pull out a calculator.”

To date, the counties of the state have had applicants of all ages and backgrounds, but there are still opportunities to teach at all grade levels.

“So far, we’ve seen a mix of retired educators and people looking to make a career change when it comes to new hires,” says Jeremy Poorte, manager of education management and HR solutions for the Ogden region.

The goal, according to Poorte, is to train every single one of the new employees before the school year.

“Getting as many jobs as possible as soon as possible will benefit our schools, our students and our teachers,” he said.

Recruitment requirements for the school year 2021-22:
