SALT LAKE CITY – A boy died of burns he and a friend melted a fence playing with matches in Salt Lake City on Saturday night, officials said.

The two boys were playing with matches on Navajo Street around 6:20 p.m., said Tony Stowe, Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Salt Lake Police Lt. Steve Wooldridge added that the teens ages 7 and 9 were also using “some kind of accelerator.”

One of the boys got 90% of his second degree body and burned most of his clothes. A neighbor or neighbors could wrap him in a blanket to put out the fire.

The boy was taken to the Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where he died.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department is conducting an investigation, Wooldridge said.
