OGDEN — Ben Lomond and Ogden last officially met on the high school hardwood during a second-round matchup of the 3A state playoffs in February 2022 with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake.

This season has not been as stellar so far.

Prior to Friday’s boys basketball bout against Ogden, Ben Lomond had lost 13 of 14 games on the schedule. The Scots’ sole victory had been against 2A St Joseph.

The Tigers had been tepid, mostly a 50/50 team, possibly trending up with a two-game region winning streak that included an upset of Grantsville on Wednesday.

But there was still city bragging rights on the line Friday night as the two Harrison Boulevard high school hoops squads tipped off for the bazillionth time in a big-time rivalry game.

While Ogden’s 1991 and 1992 state championship basketball teams were feted at halftime, the good vibes extended into the current Tiger locker room.

Those ’90s squads had a proclivity for the 3-point shot, but the 2022-2023 version is more judicious with the timing of the trey, albeit just as effective.

Ogden got out of the gates slowly in the first quarter but turned things around with a big second stanza and, although challenged in the second half, never trailed after the break. The Tigers captured a 74-61 victory over Ben Lomond.

The Scots led 16-11 after the first period but Ogden countered with a 24-11 second quarter to take control, 35-27, at the half.

“We just really bought into playing Ogden basketball; we were worried about the student section, jeers of the game,” Ogden senior forward Chino Furniss said. “Second quarter we kind of regrouped, like let’s play our game, and went from there.”

Davian Munoz made a 3-pointer for the Scots early in the second quarter, giving them a 22-17 edge, but Ogden closed the period on an 18-5 run.

Austin Johnson knocked down a shot from beyond the arc with 3 minutes left in the half, giving the Tigers the lead (26-24) for good. When Furniss added a jumper from the line, the margin grew to 35-26 with 3.5 seconds left.

Furniss had nine points during the outburst, 11 in the first half and 26 for the game, including four 3-pointers.

“We just ran our offense; we trusted our plays and I happened to be the guy that was hot tonight and my teammates found me,” Furniss said. “They set good screens, it was wide-open shots. We got rebounds and we pushed up-tempo and ran the break on them, and it was easy buckets.”

If the second quarter was about Ogden’s offense, the third quarter was all about Ben Lomond’s junior forward Jake East.

East scored seven straight points in the first 56 seconds of the third quarter, pulling the Scots back to within one point at 35-34.

But Ogden bounced back on a basket by Bingham Call, a fast break bucket by Teegan Porter off of a steal, and a 3-pointer by Furniss — and suddenly it was 42-34 with 5:42 left in the quarter.

Ben Lomond still won the third quarterback 24-20, narrowing the deficit to 55-51 heading into the fourth, with East netting 15 points in the period. He scored a game-high 29 points on the night.

“We were down, and so we had to set a tone and come out fast after the break and score the ball and get back in the game,” East said. “I just saw open shots and it felt good.”

Once again the Scots got close, this time on a 3-pointer by freshman Jordan Harrison with 7:45 left in the game, but a driving layup by Porter, two free throws from Johnson and yet another trey by Furniss gave the Tigers some breathing room, and they coasted from there.

“It (the 3-pointer) wasn’t drawn up to me; it was just a motion play and it felt good coming off my hand and I just let it go,” Furniss said. “We practice free throws; we have a free throw ladder and compete every day. We make free throws a really big part of our game.”

Johnson made seven free throws in the final frame and finished the game with 22 points for Ogden.

The Tigers (7-7, 3-0 Region 13) have now won three straight region games and seem to be in a good place.

“We all just have confidence; we have a lot of momentum right now. We’re riding high. The coaches are doing a great job keeping us going,” Furniss added.

Ben Lomond (1-14, 0-3), meanwhile, maintains a positive attitude even with his struggles this season.

“We were kind of feeling the pressure in the second quarter, but we’re getting there, we’re getting better,” East said. “It’s always the second quarter, I don’t know what it is. We just get two turnovers in a row and get a little excited.”

Munoz and Jaxon Watson were next in line behind East for Ben Lomond, scoring eight points each.

Ogden lost that second-round 3A state playoff game last February, but Furniss said that was not top of mind on Friday.

“There was a little bit of payback but we were so locked in playing our game that we didn’t worry about anything but focusing on us, not Ben Lomond,” Furniss said.
