Salt Lake City Homeowners Set Trap, Catch Thief On Camera

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A couple of Salt Lake homeowners struggled after a burglar entered their home and stole some belongings while they were sleeping. They said they found an opportunity to catch the thief on camera and it worked.

It was about where they placed a camera especially for him that they could use to stick his face on flyers around the neighborhood.

After someone walked into their house they said they left a pretty good indication that they would be back.

“Very little content was inside so it eventually left,” said Jesse, the homeowner, who refused to be identified on camera.

At one point, the thief seemed to be looking straight into the camera without realizing she was there.

Jesse came up with the idea of getting the burglar on camera last week.

“We woke up at 12:30 pm when the dog barked, noticed something was wrong in the house, found someone had just been there – stole a handbag and keys, lots of other personal items like this,” he said .

Jesse said her dog Winifred scared the guy off.

“Yeah, we definitely yell at her a lot less because she’s now barking noises,” he said.

The family said they were concerned that someone was there while they slept.

“It’s a pretty scary thing. It’s kind of a joke. It’s really difficult to get back to normal, ”said Jesse. “Yeah, I don’t think there are too many words to describe it.”

Because the thief got away with a bunch of keys, Jesse felt he would be back, so he hid a camera just for the thief.

“Fortunately, he came back in the middle of the afternoon so it was really easy to catch her on camera,” Jesse said.

Jesse hoped someone would recognize the guy and call the police.

“You know, when I watch this video I see someone who in the future might possibly regret the choices they are making today, the path they are on, and it is not too late, themselves to change, “he said. “It’s not too late to make better decisions.”

Jesse said there had been a lot of car thefts in the area recently, so many of his neighbors were looking forward to the same outcome.

Anyone with information was asked to call the South Salt Lake Police Department.
